in my humble opinion, people in the world don’t know how j-hope makes music only because they have been distracted, maybe even deceived (let’s be honest) into looking at the inconsequential rather than the relevant i.e. talent, artistry and body of work.
j-hope’s music has proven his vast musical repertoire and range, as well as his knowledge and aptitude in genre exploration and experimentation. his lyrics are complex because of their nexus of concepts and references to art, literature, poetry, film and other great lyricists’ works as well as his own. it’s a grave mistake to assume his lyrics are simple or too culturally-contextualised to be understood let alone appreciated.
i’ve always believed that his musical genius that we’ve seen so far is the equivalent of the iceberg tip, which is why i think it’s far more important to listen closely to his songs and savour them over a stretch of time and multiple times instead of just playing them on a loop or repeat to fulfil some statistics that don’t directly speak of his musical and lyrical ingenuity. even worse is to plant his songs to act as mere fillers in a vapid playlist of some other equally vapid songs. it’s disrespectful of his genius to say the least.
i find myself going on many a sonic adventure from my multiple close listens of his music. i enjoy discovering and re-discovering beats, melodies, ad libs and sound effects (among other sonic features and qualities) in his music. above all, i love being enlightened on newfound meanings, allusions and symbolism in his lyrics.
jhopemusicbox is therefore a curation of personal notes that analyse, dissect and discuss his work in aspects of music-making such as lyrics, composition, production and performance. it’s my appreciation journal for j-hope, his talent, artistry and work that i hope to share with all fans of good song and lyrics writing, good music and of course, j-hope himself.
